## 83% of shops report wrong program versions. Here’s what our live poll data reveals about G-code management and CMMC readiness.

Every shop has a story about the wrong revision landing on a machine. Most have more than one. In our recent coaching session on [G-Code Command Center](https://datanomix.io/2026/06/11/on-demand-demo-g-code-cloud-dnc/) and[ CMMC](https://datanomix.io/tag/cmmc/) readiness, we polled the room in real time to see how widespread these problems are and where shops stand on compliance now that [CMMC Phase II has been suspended](https://datanomix.io/2026/05/01/cmmc-compliance-for-manufacturers/). The answers were candid, and a few of them should make every operations leader stop and think.

### Wrong Program Versions Are a Business Problem, Not the Exception

An operator loads what looks like the right file. It runs. Somewhere down the line, someone realizes it wasn’t the current revision, and now there’s scrap, a missed delivery, or a customer asking pointed questions. Every shop leader has lived some version of this story.

Our poll numbers confirm it’s not a rare occurrence. 83% reported a wrong program version causing a production issue, a compliance or audit concern, or a customer requesting visibility into their program management in the last 12 months. Only 17% said none of the above applied to them.

That’s the majority of the room admitting the wrong file has made it to a machine and caused real damage. The fix isn’t tighter discipline or more careful operators; it’s a system that makes the correct revision the only one an operator can grab in the first place. That’s what the Command Center in[ G-Code Cloud + DNC](https://datanomix.io/g-code-cloud/) was built to do.

### Finding the Right File Is Still the Biggest Time Sink

Ask a shop why programs are late to the floor, and the instinctive answer is usually about the last step: getting a file physically onto a machine. The data tells a different story.

71% said finding the right file or revision is what actually slows delivery down. Unresolved change requests and getting a file to the right machine barely registered, at 0% each, while 29% said their process is rock solid.

The bottleneck isn’t at delivery. It’s program identification. Production teams aren’t losing time moving files; they’re losing time figuring out which one is even correct before they can start. That’s exactly the kind of gap the[ Program Compliance Scanner](https://datanomix.io/2026/08/24/program-compliance-scanner/) was built to close, before a program ever reaches the floor. When we asked manufacturers to rank what’s causing the biggest business process gap, half said all of the above! The rest is split between comparing the quote to actual performance, reconciling actual versus planned labor, and providing engineering with feedback on what actually happened on the floor.

### Change Request Conflicts Aren’t Rare. They’re Just Not Tracked

A program gets edited at the machine. Maybe it gets written down. Maybe it doesn’t. Either way, the next person to touch that program has no idea what changed or why, and the conflict only surfaces once it’s already caused a problem on the floor.

Our poll found 43% of shops catch a change request conflict occasionally, 29% rarely, and 14% say it’s a regular problem. The number that matters most, though, is the last one: 14% said they don’t track this at all.

That’s not a low-risk group; it’s an invisible one. If 14% of shops aren’t tracking conflicts, the real rate of “we caught this too late” is almost certainly higher than the other categories suggest.

### Are Precision Shops Actually Going Paperless?

Going paperless gets talked about constantly in this industry. The reality on the floor tells a more grounded story.

56% said they have paper everywhere, with nothing digitized. Only 22% reported being fully digitized and paperless. The rest sit in between: 11% have digitized prints and setup sheets, and another 11% have extended that to inspection and tooling sheets as well.

A fully paperless floor is still the minority position, not the standard. That’s less a failure and more a sign that most shops haven’t had a practical, low-friction way to get there, until documentation can live alongside the program itself, version-controlled and delivered right to the Machine HUD, the way[ Digital Production Bundles](https://datanomix.io/2026/03/10/digital-production-bundles-print-to-part-on-the-shop-floor/) do it.

### Where Are Manufacturers in Their CMMC Journey Right Now?

[CMMC readiness](https://datanomix.io/tag/cmmc/) isn’t a single starting line the whole industry crosses together, and our poll makes that clear. 43% haven’t started their CMMC journey yet. 29% have a gap analysis underway. 14% are mid-remediation, and 14% are already certified or in final assessment.

That spread carries two implications. A meaningful share of the industry hasn’t started, which matters because CMMC Phase II was suspended in July, not canceled, so the runway is a gift, not a reason to stop moving. And a real number of shops are already well down the path, proof that waiting isn’t the universal move.

If you handle CUI, [Phase I obligations](https://datanomix.io/2026/05/01/cmmc-compliance-for-manufacturers/), including NIST SP 800-171’s 110 controls and annual SPRS affirmation, are unaffected by the suspension either way. Wherever a shop sits on that spectrum, the work is the same: know where CUI lives, document what’s been implemented, and [keep the audit trail that proves it](https://datanomix.io/g-code-cloud/).

### What’s the Biggest CMMC Pain Point for Manufacturers Today?

It’s easy to assume the industry’s biggest CMMC headache is finding the right consultant or assessor. Our poll says otherwise.

The top pain points split evenly at 40% each: understanding what compliance level a shop actually needs, and the cost of remediation. Documentation and audit trail came in at 20%. Notably, 0% named finding a C3PAO or Registered Practitioner as their top concern.

The industry isn’t stuck on paperwork or partner selection; it’s stuck on a more fundamental question: what does compliance actually require for a shop like mine, and what will it cost to get there? That’s a scoping problem before it’s ever a documentation problem.

### What Does This Data Mean for Precision Manufacturers?

Put these six data points together, and a pattern emerges. Shops aren’t struggling because they lack effort or awareness. They’re struggling because the systems most floors run on, shared folders, tribal knowledge, paper setup sheets, were never built to answer basic questions with certainty: which file is correct, whether a change was reviewed, whether documentation is audit-ready.

That’s exactly the gap [G-Code Cloud + DNC](https://datanomix.io/g-code-cloud/) was built to close. If any of these numbers sound like your shop, you’re not behind. You’re just running into the same wall everyone else is.

### You’ve Got Questions, We’ve Got Answers:

**How common are wrong program versions in CNC shops?**
Very common. In a live Datanomix poll, 83% of manufacturers said a wrong program version caused a production issue, a compliance or audit concern, or a customer request for program visibility in the last 12 months. The fix isn’t more careful operators. It’s a system where only the correct revision is available. That’s what the [Command Center in G-Code Cloud + DNC](https://datanomix.io/g-code-cloud/) does.

**What slows down getting CNC programs to the floor?**
More often than most shops can see. 43% of manufacturers in our poll catch conflicts occasionally, 29% rarely, and 14% say it’s a regular problem. Another 14% don’t track conflicts at all, so the real rate is likely higher. Submitting change requests at the machine and reviewing them before they’re published closes that gap. [See how it works in this on-demand demo](https://datanomix.io/2026/06/11/on-demand-demo-g-code-cloud-dnc/).

**Are precision shops actually going paperless?**
Not yet. 56% of manufacturers in our poll still have paper everywhere, and only 22% are fully paperless. The rest are partway there: 11% have digitized prints and setup sheets, and 11% have digitized inspection and tooling sheets as well. [Digital Production Bundles](https://datanomix.io/2026/03/10/digital-production-bundles-print-to-part-on-the-shop-floor/) keep those documents version-controlled alongside the program, so operators see the current revision at the machine.

**Where are manufacturers in their CMMC journey right now?**
All over the map. 43% of manufacturers in our poll haven’t started. 29% have a gap analysis underway, 14% are mid-remediation, and 14% are certified or in final assessment. Phase 2 is paused, not canceled. The deadline moved. The work didn’t. If you handle CUI, NIST SP 800-171 and annual SPRS affirmation still apply. We wrote about it on our blog: [CMMC for Manufacturers: What Phase 2 Means and How to Get Ready](https://datanomix.io/2026/05/01/cmmc-compliance-for-manufacturers/)

**What’s the biggest CMMC pain point for manufacturers today?**
Scoping and cost. 40% of manufacturers in our poll said their top pain point is understanding which compliance level they need, and 40% cited remediation costs. 20% named documentation and audit trail. None named finding a C3PAO or Registered Practitioner. Program files are part of that scope question. If controlled data lives in your G-code, it belongs in a CMMC-ready environment, not on a USB stick. [Is your G-Code one USB stick away from a competitor?](https://youtube.com/shorts/6gZ7Jhmmj0Q)
