Southern Machine - Customer Trust Is Built on Real Data

VIDEO: How Southern Machine Works Turned Data Into Its Best Sales Tool

A 60-year-old Oklahoma machine shop redefined customer trust with real production data and earned 13x ROI doing it.

For most of the last 60 years, winning work in a machine shop came down to relationships. You played golf. You took someone to lunch. You built a relationship, and once they trusted you, the parts followed.

Frank Burch, President and CEO of Southern Machine Works in Duncan, OK, built his business on exactly that. His biggest customer sat less than a mile down the road, and trust was a handshake away.

Then the way customers judge a shop changed. Relationships still matter, but a lunch does not prove you can hold a tolerance or hit a delivery date. Buyers, especially in aerospace and defense, want evidence: how you actually run, what your quality looks like, whether your numbers hold up. And more and more of them want to see it without ever setting foot on your floor.

So Frank gave them something better than a tour. He shows them the truth, live: Production Monitoring with Datanomix, straight from the machine, on a screen they can see from anywhere. It is how he earns confidence from customers who may never visit, and why his shop is thriving while others compete on price alone

Frank opened his doors to Tony Gunn for a rare look inside a facility that has kept cameras out for six decades. In the tour, he walks through how data changed his customer conversations, why he bets on his own people, and what it takes to run precision work for aerospace and defense. Watch below, then read on for the story behind it.

The Handshake Stopped Closing Deals

Frank saw the ground moving before most of his peers did. Coming out of a background as a CPA, he knew a business that runs on lunch invitations does not scale, and it does not survive a bad decade. So right after 9/11, with no computers in the building, he started transforming into a different kind of shop. One that ran on data instead of memory and re-entered spreadsheets.

He was early, and it paid off. You cannot win new work with a steak dinner anymore. You win it by proving, in numbers, that you run parts well, at a fair cost, at quality. COVID only accelerated it: site tours became video calls, and the shops that could show their work kept the business. The ones that could only talk about it did not.

The Dashboard That Closes the Deal

When a customer cannot walk your floor, your data becomes your floor. It is the only thing that proves you are efficient, honest, and worth the price. So Frank shows them the proof. Over Zoom or Teams, he walks a customer through his in-process checks and every job as it runs. Then he pulls up his production monitoring, and the conversation changes:

Frank has always run an efficient, honest shop. What has changed is that he can now prove it in real time to anyone, anywhere. For most shops, production monitoring is an efficiency tool. Frank turned his into a sales tool.

Where the Plan Meets Reality

That trust is not one screen. It is a loop, and Frank built it by connecting the software tools he already runs.

He uses Paperless Parts to set how long a part should take at a fair margin, and ProShop ERP to turn that into the plan his team has to hit. Then Datanomix Production Monitoring reports what actually happened on the floor, and Frank feeds that truth straight back into the next quote.

That circle is exactly the gap most shops never close. An ERP tells you what should happen, rarely what actually did, and that space between plan and reality is where margin quietly leaks away.

It is the problem Datanomix ERP Insights was built to solve, laying job standards, labor targets, and due dates from your ERP planning right next to real-time machine data. That shows up in three ways:

  1. Margin Master compares real setup and run times to the ERP standard, so quotes are built on proof
  2. Labor Efficiency Insights turn lost hours back into capacity.
  3. Delivery Track forecasts completion dates based on actual progress.

Best of all, Datanomix meets a shop where it already is. The Universal ERP Connector syncs with nearly any system, cloud or on-prem, and Datanomix layers onto the tools you already use rather than ripping them out.

The Numbers Behind the Confidence

Frank did not build a story. He built a shop that performs, and the post-pilot results prove it.

16% more utilization. 35% more capacity. 34% more uptime.

380 more productive hours. $30,435 in recovered productivity. A 13x return on the Datanomix investment.

That is the gain on a single machine, every year. It is the kind of result that shows up long after the pilot ends, in a shop that runs leaner and quotes with confidence, the same operational consistency and quoting confidence Southern Machine Works built with machine monitoring in the first place.

Don’t take our word for it, run the math with your machines.

You Cannot Buy Machinists in Rural Oklahoma

None of this works without people who can hold a tenth. In a rural southern community, those people are hard to find, and Frank has no patience for shops that only complain about it:

His answer was NTMA-U, the NTMA journeyman machinist program. Frank ran the beta. One of his young machinists, trained on the job straight out of high school, became one of the program’s first graduates. Ten years later, when the program needed a refresh, Frank stepped up, and the relaunched NTMA-U which features his machines and his employees in the national training curriculum.

Why does it matter to him? The Midwest has strong apprenticeship pipelines. The South does not. NTMA-U lets Frank hire smart people who were never machinists and build them up through shop math, blueprint reading, GD&T, and metals until they are. Datanomix is a proud NTMA member for the same reason. When a shop invests in its people the way it invests in its machines, everyone in the industry wins.

The Ultimate Trust Test: CMMC Compliance for Machine Shops

The customers who most need to trust a shop they cannot fully see are the ones handing over controlled data. Frank built his business around exactly that work, because it is where a U.S. shop can still win. He competes where technology and precision matter: DoD, aerospace, and space. Over 20 years, his tolerances have tightened from plus or minus 15 thousandths to tenths to earn it.

That work comes with a wall of requirements. For any shop pursuing defense contracts, CMMC compliance is now the price of admission, and Southern Machine Works is ITAR registered and runs a CMMC compliant operation with air-gapped machines, protected customer data, and real site security. For Frank, that investment is the whole point:

Meeting that bar takes the right tools. Controlled programs have to reach the right machine with full traceability and airtight security, every time, without slowing the floor down.

That is exactly what Datanomix G-Code Cloud + DNC delivers. It is GovCloud-native for CMMC 2.0, with approval workflows, full revision history, and the right program reaching the right machine every time. For any shop pursuing defense and aerospace work, G-Code Cloud + DNC  simplifies your CMMC plan, turning one of the toughest parts of certification into a managed, traceable process.

Proof Beats a Sales Pitch

For Frank, it always came back to one idea:

Show them. Not tell them, show them. That is the whole shift. The handshake and the golf and the dinners still matter, but the fastest way to earn a customer now is to prove how you run before they ever visit. Southern Machine Works spent 60 years earning its reputation. Data is simply how Frank shows it now, to anyone, whether or not they walk through his door.

Ready to Show Your Customers the Truth?

Frank does not win trust by talking about how good his shop is. He shows them, live, on a screen. Datanomix Production Monitoring gives you the same real-time proof on the machines you already have, so your next customer conversation runs on numbers instead of hope.
